with GLML”.

Abstract: In this paper, we
introduce a methodology for annotating compositional operations in
natural
language text and describe the Generative Lexicon Mark-up Language
(GLML),
inspired by the Generative Lexicon, for identifying such relations.
While most
annotation systems capture surface relationships, GLML captures the
“compositional history” of the argument selection relative to the
predicate.
There are three main tasks described in the paper: (i) Argument
Selection and
Coercion annotation task; (ii) Qualia in modification constructions;
(iii) Type
selection in modification constructions and V-N combinations involving
dot
objects. We show that by identifying and subsequently annotating the
typing and
subtyping shifts in these constructions, we gain an insight into the
workings
of the general mechanisms of composition.

Lenci y A. Zarcone. “Identifying actional features through semantic
priming:
cross-Romance comparison”. Cahiers
Chronos. Amsterdam: Rodopi.
Abstract: This paper reports four semantic priming
experiments in Italian and Spanish, whose main goal was to empirically
verify
the psychological reality of two aspectual features, resultativity and
durativity. In the durativity task, the participants were asked whether the verb
referred to a durable
situation, and in the resultativity task whether it denoted a situation
with a
clear outcome. The results prove that both features are involved in
online
processing of the verb meaning: achievements and activities (classified
as
[+resultative, -durative] and [-resultative, +durative]) were processed
faster
in certain priming contexts. The pattern of priming effects obtained in
the
Romance languages presents some striking similarities (in the
resultativity
task, only achievements were primed) alongside some
intriguing differences, and clearly contrasts with the behaviour of
another
language tested, Russian, whose aspectual system differs in significant
ways.

(2013): “Informativeness constraints and compositionality”. R. Saurí et

(eds.), Proceedings of the 6th
International Conference on Generative Approaches to the Lexicon. Pisa,

Abstract: We examine the role
that compositional mechanisms and lexical semantics play in the
determination
of informativeness at the phrasal and clausal level. While the
computation of
the “relevance” of an utterance is largely determined by pragmatic
factors, we
argue that phrasal informativeness can be computed compositionally and
independently of pragmatics. We focus on the contrast between
predicative and
derived participial modificational constructions (‘build a house’
results in
well-formed sentences, while *‘a built house’ does not). We compute
informativeness within an NP in terms of minimal model generation,
using the
qualia semantics of the head N: modification is informative whenever a
qualia
value is not satisfied in all models.

A. Lenci y A. Zarcone (2012): “Semantic Priming Study of Russian Aspect
and
Resultativity”. Oslo Studies in Language (OSLa)
3(4), 177-206.
Abstract: This paper reports
four semantic priming experiments, in which resultative, processual,
and
delimitative Russian verbs were tested: the participants had to decide
whether
the target denoted an event with a clear outcome. The results suggest
that the
aspectual feature of resultativity is consistently exploited in
semantic
priming (processual targets were primed in two experiments), and that
the
morphological cues facilitate the identification of resultative targets
(prefixed perfectives were processed faster than unprefixed
perfectives). A
category-induction experiment designed to investigate the subjects’
tendency to
group the delimitatives with resultatives or with processuals confirmed
that the
speakers place them between these two domains, but much closer to the
processuals than to the resultatives. These findings support the
distinction of
boundedness vs. telicity and suggests that the delimitatives can take
on
prototypical perfective role (resultativity) and be conceptualized as
the
perfective counterpart of the basic imperfective.

Abstract: We describe the

This task involves characterizing the type of compositional operation
that
exists between a predicate and the arguments it selects. Specifically,
the goal
is to identify whether the type that a verb selects is satisfied
directly by
the argument, or whether the argument must change type to satisfy the
verb
typing. We discuss the problem in detail, describe the data preparation

task, and analyze the results of the submissions.

Congreso Internacional de Lingüística General. Madrid:

Resumen: This paper presents a
treatment of aspectual formation in Russian based on the eventive
characteristics of verbal forms. Unlike other proposals of this kind,
my
hypothesis assumes that aspect-changing processes in this language
transform
the event structure of the verb in two different ways: the
perfectivizing
prefixation selects for certain parts of the simple event as well as
adds some
extra bits of idiosyncratic meaning related to the manner of action,
intensity,
etc.; the imperfectivizing suffixation, in turn, is in charge of
multiplying
events or visualizing their preparatory phase. Concrete examples of the
event
structure transformations throughout the aspectual derivation are given.

Alicante, 11-42.
Abstract:
This paper
investigates the relationship between the syntactic configuration of
the
unaccusative and unergative motion verbs, on the one hand, and certain
semantic
properties of the respective predicates, encoded in the event structure
and the
semantic definition of the superficial subject, on the other hand.
Hence, it is
assumed that the unaccusativity is syntactically encoded and
semantically
determined. It is shown that the semantic class of verbs of motion in
not
homogeneous and that its variable behavior with respect to different
unaccusative diagnostics is due to the alternation of syntactically
relevant
aspects of meaning. The verbs of motion in Russian and Spanish are
argued to
fall into various subclasses, that arise from the combination of two
features:
delimitedness and animacy.
